Robert &  Capt. Josh  12/30/2023 — Crappie are doing well in the North Port and Port Charlotte canals. A couple big bluegill and Mayan cichlids are in the ponds along Sumter Blvd in North Port. A few bass have been caught locally on live shiners.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  12/16/2023 — Some crappie and bass. Most bass guys are using shiners; a few have got them on plastic lizards or worms.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  12/09/2023 — Bass are hitting mostly on shiners, with a few on plastic lizards and worms. A lot of anglers are going out for crappie, but we're not getting a lot of great reports. The next cold snap will probably be the one that turns them on.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  12/02/2023 — Crappie have turned on in most of the freshwater canals. Look for tree branches hanging into the water and deeper spots around pilings and bridges.

------------------------------------

Robert &  Capt. Josh  11/25/2023 — Most of the reports have been bass, mostly on live shiners but a few on soft plastics. The upcoming cold should fire up the crappie.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  11/18/2023 — Crappie minnows have been selling and people are catch a few. Bass fishing has slowed up a bit but there were plenty caught on shiners this week.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  11/11/2023 — Bass on shiners are the big story. A few anglers are using spinnerbaits and plastic lizards. Lots of anglers are looking for crappie but finding only a few. Mayan cichlids and tilapia are out there and relatively easy to catch.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  11/05/2023 — Bass are doing well. Shiners are still the hot bait, but plastic lizards and worms are working better.

------------------------------------

Robert &  Capt. Josh  10/28/2023 — Bass are pounding shiners, with lots of fish in the 2-pound range and a few up to 4 pounds. Some Mayan cichlids and tilapia also.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  10/14/2023 — Bass reports have been good, mostly on shiners. A few smaller fish have also been taken on plastic worms or artificial frogs.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  10/07/2023 — Bass are great on shiners anywhere there's moving water. Bluegill, tilapia and Mayans are biting but have slowed down a little.

Capt. Josh & Fishin' Frank 10/03/23  — The bass and tilapia fishing has been good in Webb Lake. Zippin' Ziggy topwaters and Bangtail inline spinners are both good. The freshwater PC canals are producing bass on shiners or shiner-imitating lures. Artificial frogs are also getting fish; spray them down with WD-40 and fish them right up in the weeds. In the morning, fish the sunny side of the canal. In the evening, fish the shady side.

------------------------------------

Robert &  Capt. Josh  09/16/2023 — No reports this week.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  09/09/2023 — Anywhere there's moving water might produce bass, bluegills and Mayan cichlids. Beetle spins and crappie jigs are ideal for panfish; shiners are better for bass.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  09/02/2023 — The rain has perked things up. A lot of anglers are heading out with shiners for bass.

------------------------------------

Robert &  Capt. Josh  07/22/2023 — Super slow due to the heat. Check the spillways or culverts where water is moving, or head down to the Everglades and fish for peacock bass.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  07/15/2023 — No consistent reports. A few bluegill and bass here and there, but it's too hot. Until we get some rain or significantly lower temps, it's not going to be good.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  07/01/2023 — Lots of smaller bass, mostly caught on shiners. Some bluegill have been caught, but there are more tilapia than 'gills.

------------------------------------

Robert &  Capt. Josh  06/24/2023 — Tilapia, Mayan cichlids and a few bluegill in the North Port and Port Charlotte canals. Bass fishing has been OK. Any flowing spillways are hot spots. Live shiners and plastic frogs or lizards have been working well.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  06/10/2023 — Some of the spillways are flowing and producing a few bass and bluegills.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  06/03/2023 — Some bluegill, but mostly tilapia and Mayan cichlids. If you want bass and crappie, look for moving water.

------------------------------------

Robert &  Capt. Josh  05/20/2023 — We still have no shiners or minnows, plus it's hot and there's been no rain, so it sucks.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  05/13/2023 — Few reports, besides a handful of tilapia.

------------------------------------

Robert &  Capt. Josh  03/25/2023 — The bass are doing really well, with lots of 2- to 3-pounders this week. Shiners are choice still, but many artificials might work too. Crappie are biting on minnows in the canals.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  03/18/2023 — Bass are crushing shiners. Bluegills have been picking up locally and on Lake June. Lake June has also been producing good numbers of crappie.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  03/11/2023 — The bass bite is great with the fish being post-spawn hungry. Everglades fishing is amazing as the water dry up, forcing the fish into smaller areas and more competition.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  03/04/2023 — Crappie are still OK on minnows, but anglers are also getting bluegills, tilapia and small bass on those minnows as the crappie bite slows down. Bass fishing reports are mixed but OK locally. Everglades anglers are getting loads of oscars, Mayan cichlids and tilapia.

------------------------------------

Robert &  Capt. Josh  02/18/2023 — The tilapia have been hungry this week, eating worms. Some bluegills on worms too. Crappie on minnows and Beetle Spins. Largemouth bass are hitting everything: Plastic worms, artificial lizards and frogs, live shiners.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  02/11/2023 — Some crappie activity went on with the full moon. However, crappie minnows have been tough to get. You can net grass shrimp. Lots of bass in the 1- to 4-pound range, mostly on shiners. Oscars, Mayan cichlids and bowfin in the canals south of Naples.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  02/04/2023 — A lot of crappie, hopscotched everywhere. Wigglers are catching bluegills, tilapia, Mayan cichlids and the occasional bullhead catfish. Lots of 1- to 3-pound bass hitting shiners as they prepare to spawn.

------------------------------------

Robert &  Capt. Josh  01/28/2023 — Good crappie reports in our area around culverts and spill dams and the central Florida lakes. Mostly minnows. Bass up to 6 pounds reported locally, with most around 2 or 3, caught on shiners. Bluegills have been showing up too.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  01/21/2023 — Lots of crappie reports. Lakes Trafford, Placid, Istokpoga and other lakes have been doing well, but Okeechobee has been a bit slower. Minnows have been best by far. Beetle Spins and jigs may work too. Most of the bass caught have been smaller; shiners have been the hot bait.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  01/07/2023 — Lots of bass one to two pounds this week, mainly on shiners. The crappie bite has been pretty good, all on minnows.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Robert &  Capt. Josh  12/31/2022 — Some largemouth bass and crappie on live minnows and shiners.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  12/24/2022 — The crappie have been turning on nicely, taking Beetle Spins, jigs and live minnows. Bass are hitting best on shiners but will also take plastic worms and all the usual bass baits.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  12/17/2022 — Bass are in pre-spawn and feeding heavily. Shiners are the hot thing, but shallow-running crankbaits and plastic worms are also catching fish. Crappie fishing has been good if not great in Nine Mile Canal and the other North Port canals. Fish close to structure.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  08/29/2022 — Very slow. Bass aren't feeding much, even around the flowing culverts.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  08/13/2022 — Largemouths are eating shiners or plastic worms dragged slowly across the bottom. Bluegills are slow but the tilapia and Mayan cichlids are decent. Moving water is the key to all of it.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Robert &  Capt. Josh  07/30/2022 — Lots of largemouth bass on shiners this week, and it seems to be happening all over the place. Lots of Mayan cichlids and tilapia also.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  07/23/2022 — Port Charlotte and North Port canals are producing Mayan cichlids, tilapia, bluegills and small bass. You need moving water. Hand-size bluegill up Shell Creek.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  07/02/2022 — Bass are eating shiners around moving water (spillways, culverts, etc). Bluegills, Mayan cichlids and tilapia are taking wigglers or nightcrawler chunks, or try small Beetle Spins.
